Het Nieuwe Instituut

In a workshop by and for representatives of fellow proto-Zoöps, Het Nieuwe Instituut shares a number of lessons that you learn when you become a Zoöp. On 22 April 2022, the institute added Maike van Stiphout to the organisation as Speaker for the Living. The institute thus became the first Zoöp.With her background in nature-inclusive architecture and landscape design, and and based on observing the way Het Nieuwe Instituut participates in its ecosystems, Maike, as Speaker for the Living, represents the more-than-human interests within the Zoöp and ensures that these are included in the decision-making process.

Since Het Nieuwe Instituut adopted this organisational model, we have learned a lot: for example, about listening and watching life in and around the building, gardens and ponds, about the usefulness and feasibility of various regenerative goals, about working with a Speaker for the Living, and about ways in which to get an entire organisation on board with the Zoöp idea. Some lessons are specific to the institute as Zoöp, but many of the insights gained are relevant for all future Zoöps.

Based on the lessons of Het Nieuwe Instituut as well as on what aspiring Zoöps need, in this workshop we aim to develop the outline of a training programme for Speakers for the Living.

Het Nieuwe Instituut presents How to Do a Zoöp, a programme that explores the legal status of more-than-humans and the Zoöp model as a way for organisations to work with the Rights of Nature in their operational sphere. The programme is part of the official Dutch contribution to the Venice Biennale, Who is We? It has been organised in collaboration with the Embassy of the North Sea, TBA21 – Academy’s Ocean Space and We Are Here Venice. Featuring presentations, discussions and a research workshop, it will culminate in the public launch of the Zoöp Manifesto and the legal documentation of the Zoöp model. The programme is part of The Pavilion Days from 23 to 24 September 2021.

In this public design-scenario research workshop, participating artists, designers, architects and experts investigate marine permaculture as a (re)generative transition strategy for repurposing obsolete fossil-fuel infrastructure in the North Sea. The aim is to develop a strategy for transforming oil production platforms into marine zoöps for ecologically sustainable food forests and carbon capture.

This is the third gathering in a series of research workshops in which the establishment of a zoöp is prepared. A zoöp is a format for collaboration between a human orgnisation and a collective body of nonhumans. The insights developed in the previous zoöp research workshop will be translated into the designs of various prototypes for instruments that help perceive the ecological development within a zoöp.

In this design research workshop, that is part of ThingsCon, a joining of forces is sought between critical design practices around smart cities, the practice of IoT driven precision farming and unexplored potential of machine learning systems (framed by the ‘responsible AI’ discourse). The central question of the workshop is: (how) can the ecological development of cities be supported by machine learning systems?

Based on the insights provided by Jaya Klara Brekke and Jay Springett at the Terraforming Earth event on May 10, 2018 in this Lab a group of ecologists, coders, engineers, designers, and (legal) philosophers will formulate some constituting principles of a 21st-century society of humans, other organisms and machines.
